The three elements of Wánanga being communication, problem solving and innovation are huge aspects to being a success learner, teacher and leader. As Principal I know I will be an effective communicator who will utilise a range of technologies to make my role and the teachers role more effective. In 2014 as acting Principal we looked at the structure of meeting and realises that we where meeting as much as we were teaching. Using innovations like Google Docs to plan and collaborate with each other eliminated the need for time wasting meetings and gave the teacher more freedom to teach and plan for their teaching. I don't believe in wasting time and as Principal I will always find ways for teachers to do what they are best at...which is teach.
As a leader in my current role and as an educator I have always given huge emphasis to how I communicate with people wether it be a student, teacher or parent. I believe that communication is an essential tool to effective leadership and I have always endeavoured to convey any message in a clear, simple and straight forward manner.
How we communicate is also just as important as what we are trying to communicate. Finding effective ways to communicate and get your message across is essential to a successful school. When I was acting principal in 2014 I put in place two well over due initiatives to get our message out to more of our parents and wider community. These were the development of a new website which had been missing at our school and the development of our school App. These are both modern ways for our parents to stay in formed with instant information about our school, newsletters and cancellations etc. Being innovative is a huge part of our school culture and what we have always done so this was an easy decision to make to go down the digital path for information and was also the first steps to eliminate paper waste and become more environmentally minded.
As a leader I have always prided myself on the way I communicate with others and that messages are always conveyed in a clear, precise manner. I have also looked for ways to eliminate the need for paper and where possible meeting that don't need to be had. Utilising Google Docs is one way that this has happened.
Identifying ways to cut back on teacher workload while maintaining a quality learning environment through creating a collaborative staff environment i.e. Google Docs is just one way I have helped problem solve for the better.
